Wim Wenders’ Much Anticipated, 10-Years-In-The-Making Digital Restoration.
“As beautiful as it might have looked in Cannes ’87,
every print ever since is six generations removed.” – W.W.

Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin wall, it forever made the name Wim Wenders synonymous with film art.
Few modern films have made the transition to classic status as quickly as DER HIMMEL UBER BERLIN, a canny merging of cerebral formal experimentalism and unabashed popular romanticism that swept up highbrow critics alongside a larger mainstream audience that was atypical of ‘challenging’ foreign-language cinema of the day.
Artist & filmmaker Jerry Barrish, credited in the film as “The Director In The Bunker”, will introduce the Tuesday, 10/30 6:30 show, regaling us with tales from the W.O.D. set in Berlin, back in the ‘80’s!
Directed by Wim Wenders. Written by Wim Wenders & Peter Handke. With Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander, Curt Bois, Peter Falk, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds & Jerry Barrish as the director in the bunker! Color and B&W. 1.66:1. DCP. 127 mins.
