“Broadcasting the past in future tense.”

Co-presented by Amoeba Music

Following his brief sojourn in the American studio system, genre mastermind Tsui Hark (DOUBLE TEAM, ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA) returned to his native Hong Kong to release a blast of pre-millennium tension, 2000’s TIME AND TIDE. Hard up for cash after unexpected fatherhood Tyler (Nicholas Tse) bumbles his way into joining a bodyguard service led by Uncle Ji (Anthony Wong), colliding him with fellow mercenary Jack (Wu Bai) and the center of a globe-spanning criminal conspiracy.

Tsui’s masterful blend of daffy melodrama, combined with action choreographer Xin Xin Xiong’s stuntwork put this work in rarified air against the other masterpieces of Hong Kong action cinema. (Jake Isgar)

Directed by Tsui Hark. Hong Kong. 2000. 113 minutes. In Cantonese with English subtitles. 35mm. Print courtesy of Sony Pictures Repertory.
