Director James Demo & Peacemaker Padraig O’Malley in conversation with Boalt Hall School of Law & UC Hastings College of Law professor of mediation and negotiation, Clint Waasted,
Fri, March 30!
“A deeply moving portrait of its truly admirable, complex subject.”
– The Hollywood Reporter
“The movie is a fascinating portrait that is if anything too brief.”
– New York Times
“The more we get to know him, the more his core motivation – is he an idealist or something else? – becomes the mystery of the film.”
Padraig O’Malley is legendary among the international human rights community for being a negotiator / mediator of reconciliation in some of the world’s most contentious conflict zones—he spent the 1970s and ’80s in Northern Ireland, the 1990s in South Africa, and the years since focused on the Middle East and the Balkans. Paradoxically a pacifist in war-torn countries, and an owner of the Cambridge pub where he first settled into decades of alcoholism, but that now funds his peacekeeping activities as he doggedly struggles to maintain his sobriety in A.A. The developer of groundbreaking principles based upon his experience in recovery, O’Malley ambitiously finances conferences around the world, flying in representatives of divided cultures undergoing their own peace process so as to assist with reconciliation efforts in other regions. We meet Padraig in the third act of his life as he strives to find salvation in conflict zones, his personal relationships and within himself.
