November 12 only

In anticipation of the new Peter Bogdanovich doc, THE GREAT BUSTER (opening 11/16), wherein he intimately explores the fertile output & astonishing biography of the silent era visionary, the Roxie is thrilled to present a 4K digital restoration of what many film historians claim is Keaton’s masterpiece.

An action-adventure-comedy with a narrative that whirls around a Confederate locomotive called The General, hijacked by Union spies, and the Rebel engineer who gives all form of chase trying to save it and his gal. The film initially drew poor reviews and tanked at the box office, derailing Keaton’s autonomy as an auteur for the remainder of his career. Astonishingly, the film entered the public domain in ’54 because its claimant never renewed the copyrights. But it’s the feature of which Buster was most proud. In 1989 it was one of the first films to be voted onto the National Film Registry, and today film historians widely consider it among the pinnacles of the silent film era, while many place it within the pantheon of Greatest Films Ever Made.

“Buster made many tours de force of hilarity. THE GENERAL is something else, a historical parody set during the Civil War where comedy, rich but deliberate & insinuating, aims not to split your sides but rather to elicit & sustain wonder for the duration of it’s 79 minute run time”. – Gary Giddins, Slate.

Directed by Clyde Bruckman & Buster Keaton. Written by: Buster Keaton & Clyde Bruckman . With Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Glen Cavender. 79 mins.

NOTE FILMS START RIGHT AT THE LISTED SHOWTIME. Roxie Theater trailers play during the 30 minutes prior to showtime.
