SF IndieFest: LEVEL 16

First show: February 08

The teenage girls of Vestalis Academy are meticulously trained in the art of being “clean girls,” and practicing the virtues of perfect femininity. But what exactly are they being trained for? One night after not taking her mandated vitamins, Vivien begins to put the pieces together. In a film that exists under the shadow of The Handmaid’s Tale and the current political climate, Esterhazy offers a dark vision of the future, of females as commodities and compulsory conformity. But in the midst of oppression, Vivien discovers the strongest weapon of all, friendship and why the powers that run the Academy have sought to keep the girls from developing strong bonds.

Written & directed by Danishka Esterhazy. Starring Katie Douglas and Celina Martin. Narrative. 102 min. Canada.
