Loosely based on Cameron Crowe’s time as a teenage rock writer for Rolling Stone, this ultimate throwback film chronicles the funny and poignant coming of age of 15-year-old William Miller, an unabashed music fan who is inspired by the seminal bands of the time. When his love of music lands him an assignment from Rolling Stone magazine to interview the fictional up-and-coming band Stillwater, William embarks on an eye-opening journey with the band’s tour, meeting a charismatic cast of characters including the indelible Band-Aid Pennie Lane.

Dir. Cameron Crowe. Starring Patrick Fugit, Jason Lee, Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Frances McDormand. 2hrs 2min. USA, 2000. Digital.

SPECIAL GUESTS:

Ben Fong-Torres became an editor for Rolling Stone in 1969, a year after starting to write for it. He wrote some 30 cover stories and interviewed major artists in rock, pop, R&B and comedy, from Ray Charles to the Stones; from Linda Ronstadt to Steve Martin. He’s written for dozens of national magazines and published 11 books. He writes the Radio Waves column in the Sunday Chronicle.  He’s also an award winning broadcaster, on TV and radio, and is working on the book for a planned musical called “Summer of Love.”

Pennie Lane, whose early life inspired Kate Hudson’s character in the Academy Award-winning film ALMOST FAMOUS, kept her infamous identity quiet for 27 years. These days, it’s business as usual for the Oregon truffle and hemp farm entrepreneur Pennie Lane Trumbull and her staff: Milo (leaping), Ellie (standing) and Andy (grazing). Her Sauvie Island ranch, pennielane, is one of the best-kept secrets among visiting musicians and celebrities in the film, art, wine and food worlds.

Roni Hoffman has photographed Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, the Isley Brothers, Waylon Jennings, the New York Dolls, and the Clash, among others. She was friends with Patti Smith when the future rock ‘n’ roll hall of famer lived in the Chelsea with Robert Mapplethorpe. She was there in 1967 when Jimi Hendrix’s helicopter landed on the Pan Am building upon his return to the US from London. Among other incredible stories and accomplishments, her picture of next-door neighbor, Lester Bangs, cavorting on Sixth Avenue, is on the cover of his biography, as well as in the Director’s Cut DVD of ALMOST FAMOUS.

NOTE FILMS START RIGHT AT THE LISTED SHOWTIME. Roxie Theater trailers play during the 30 minutes prior to showtime.
