Costume contest + live Prince DJ set with BFF.fm DJs Cosmic Amanda, Powell Pressburger, and Chaki before the movie!
Prince plays “The Kid,” a young musician from Minneapolis tormented by his troubled home life; his physically abusive father and a verbally and emotionally abusive mother cause him to act out. The frontman of the band, The Revolution, the Kid constantly rehearses his own music during the day. Each night, he performs at the First Avenue nightclub alongside his rival, Morris Day and his group The Time. His bandmates, guitarist Wendy and keyboardist Lisa, are frustrated by the Kid’s rigidness and aversion to their compositions. Eventually, Morris turns the Kid’s bandmates and girlfriend, Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero), against him to form an all-woman band. At first, this brings out the worst in the Kid, who emulates his parents’ abusive behavior towards Apollonia. He must work through his issues and find a way to compromise, make peace with his life situation, play his music from the heart and soul, and redeem himself.
