PAIN AND GLORY (DOLOR Y GLORIA)
First show: November 22
Presented by RoxCine + OutLook
Pedro Almodovar’s newest film is an autobiographical exploration revolving around director Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas). As his physical health declines, Salvador reencounters and recounts his life events — some occurring in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first love in 1980s Madrid, the pain of the love lost, writing to forget the unforgettable, his discovery of cinema, and the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films.
Pain and Glory talks about how life’s pains and passions fuel creation, and about the difficulty of distancing oneself from the product of these experiences. In reckoning with his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation.
A film by Pedro Almodóvar. 2019, 114m, Spain. In Spanish with English subtitles. A Sony Pictures Classics Release.
