Walter Murch in a talking-head interview for Making Waves

Directed by veteran Hollywood sound editor Midge Costin, the film reveals the hidden power of sound in cinema, introduces us to the unsung heroes who create it, and features insights from legendary directors with whom they collaborate. Featuring the insights and stories of iconic directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Barbra Streisand, Ang Lee, Sofia Coppola and Ryan Coogler, working with sound design pioneers–Walter Murch, Ben Burtt and Gary Rydstrom–and the many women and men who followed in their footsteps.

Making the work of a largely unsung group of technical artists accessible to the general moviegoer, Midge Costin’s very enjoyable Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound presents a century-plus history of the evolution of sound in film while occasionally, quietly suggesting that what a movie offers to the ears is more important than what’s onscreen. However seriously we take that claim, the documentary — a polished directing debut for veteran sound editor Costin — will leave many geekier audience members wishing it were three times as long. – Hollywood Reporter

Directed by Midge Costin. 2019. 95 min.
