“What Coppola presents is something akin to a mindfulness session – the art of being present in the moment.” -Kelechi Ehenulo, Screen Queens
Two lost souls visiting Tokyo — a young, beautiful, but neglected wife of an illustrious photographer (Scarlett Johansson) and a washed-up movie star shooting a commercial for Japanese whiskey (Bill Murray) — find an odd solace and pensive freedom to be real in each other’s company, away from their lives in America. As their love affair blossoms, a feeling of unease and sadness begins to set in as they realize the liminality of their situation and with anxiety approach the dates they must fly home and resume their normal lives.
Directed by Sofia Coppola. United States. 2003. 102 minutes. DCP.
