brandnewtestament1An irresistibly surreal satire from the fevered Belgian brain that brought you TOTO LE HERO and  (MR. NOBODY screening here Fri., 1/6!)

The Brand New Testament begins with one simple conceit: God exists, and He’s a real jerk. He lives in a high-rise apartment in Brussels and never gets out of His pajamas. He takes sadistic delight in dreaming up new “laws” to torment humanity, and He’s a petty tyrant to his wife and ten year-old daughter, Ea. Like her brother before her, Ea has had enough of her Father’s abuse and when she spies the right opportunity, she hacks into His computer and leaks to the entire world—by text message—the only thing He has over them: their inevitable death date.

brandnewtestament6Perfectly cast as God, Benoit Poelvoorde explodes with a performance as unhinged as his live-wire film debut in MAN BITES DOG, while the reigning queen of French cinema Catherine Deneuve unabashedly goes for broke as an apostle who stumbles upon extra-species sexual satisfaction.  In this winner of 4 Magritte Awards (Belgian Oscars), including Best Film, Director and Screenplay, Jaco Van Dormael proposes a dark, witty and psychedelically luscious answer to the loaded question: what would you do if you knew exactly how much time you had left to live?

Directed by Jaco Van Dormael. Written by Raffi Asdourian. With Catherine Deneuve, François Damiens, Benoit Poelvoorde, Pili Groyne & Yolande Moreau. Belgium|France|Luxembourg. In French with English subtitles. 2016. 115 mins. DCP & HD Digital.
