BLUE COLLAR (35mm)
First show: September 08
In honor of Paul Schrader’s upcoming feature THE CARD COUNTER, starring Oscar Isaac, The Roxie presents Schrader’s directorial debut starring Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto.
When Detroit autoworkers Zeke Brown (Richard Pryor), Jerry Bartowski (Harvey Keitel) and Smokey James (Yaphet Kotto) decide to rob their own union, they are initially disappointed by the relatively small haul. However, upon closer inspection, the three amateur thieves discover that they have made off with something potentially much more valuable than money: the union’s ledger, filled with bogus figures and links to organized crime. Should they blackmail the union or go to the authorities? Acclaimed filmmaker Paul Schrader’s directorial debut.
Directed by Paul Schrader. 1978. USA. 114 min. 35mm courtesy of Universal Pictures.
“A STUNNING DEBUT, TAKING CHANCES AND WINNING AT THEM. Like On the Waterfront, both an indictment and an entertainment… It took a special filmmaking gift to make it burst with humor, humanity, and suspense as well…”
– Roger Ebert
“The performances are excellent. Mr. Keitel’s Jerry is all itchy ignorance… Mr. Kotto [is] cool [and] self-assured. The center of the film, however, is Mr. Pryor, who has a role that for the first time makes use of the wit and fury that distinguish his comedy routines.”
– Vincent Canby, The New York Times
