GUNDERMANN – 6:00pm
OPENING NIGHT SPECIAL PREMIERE WITH CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD HONOREE ANDREAS DRESEN IN PERSON!
Andreas Dresen returned to Germany’s recent past with his portrait of the contradictory life of the digger driver Gerhard Gundermann, who made a name for himself as a singer-songwriter in former East Germany, tragically dying at only 43 in 1998. As the hero/anti-hero Gundermann, Alexander Scheer whose previous credits include Sun Alley and The Young Karl Marx, wants to be a good worker, great husband, caring father, artist, clown, and politician in fact, he is everything at the same time. And the type of person who can’t help rubbing others the wrong way not something that’s only restricted to his home of East Germany….
Prior to the film screening, special guest Andreas Dresen will be honored with the Berlin & Beyond Film Festival’s Career Achievement Award in a special ceremony. Mr. Dresen will also be joining us for a Q&A after the film.

Brothers Christian (43) and Georg (45) have not seen each other for 20 years. They finally cross paths at their father’s funeral, of all places. At first, their radio silence continues. Carpenter Georg cared for their father until his death, and manager Christian has not been back home for years. But after a booze-fueled wake, the tension between the two of them eases and the brothers drunkenly decide to realize their boyhood dream of driving across Germany on their mopeds. And so begins a journey full of exciting highs and comically dramatic lows. A journey that allows the two brothers to reconnect and leads them to a turning point in their lives.
