Set in a small village in Sicily, just after the World War II, the film follows the friendship of a young boy with the town projectionist. In the dark of a cramped movie theater, the boy, who later in life becomes a prominent Cinecittà movie director, is exposed week after week to the wonders of film by his mentor. A box-office flop in its 1988 (155 minutes) Italian release, Cinema Paradiso was acquired by Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax and distributed in a shortened version (minus 31 minutes) the following year. International audiences embraced the film’s bitter sweet sentimentality, as expressed through Philippe Noiret ‘s and young Italian newcomer Salvatore Cascio’s performances. It remains a classic about the passion for moviegoing. Cinema Paradiso won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as a Special Jury Prize at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. Italian composer Ennio Morricone gave a big hand to Tornatore’s ode to nostalgia, creating one of his most memorable scores. Morricone’s work was not even nominated for the Oscars in that year, one of the most infamous Academy Awards snubs.
Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. 1988. In Italian with English subtitles. DCP. 124 mins.
