A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN
January 14 only
In Honor Of The Beloved Penny Marshall, Join Us For A One Night Only Presentation of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN.
Penny Marshall stole the hearts of audiences around the world both as an actor (most notably on LAVERNE & SHIRLEY) and a director.
In honor of her legacy and in celebration of her life, we bring you one of our Penny Marshall favorites A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. This 1992 cult baseball classic sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men’s baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall’s movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis and Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism.
With a stellar supporting cast including Madonna and Rosie O’Donnel, a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, and Marshall’s moment making direction, this team of underdogs are an absolute delight to watch on screen. And just remember: there’s no crying in baseball!
Directed by Penny Marshall. 2 hrs 8 mins. USA. 1992. DCP.
