9 to 5
First show: May 08
“…laughs from beginning to end, a catchy theme song, clever editing techniques, and inspirational characters who prove that we’re better united than divided. If you haven’t already seen 9 to 5 you’re missing out.” -Tuesday Blue, Film Inquiry
Nearly three decades after its release, the rambunctious trifecta of secretaries (Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin) from 9 to 5 continue to captivate audiences from East to West. The trio, one of whom has been passed over for promotion because she is a woman, spend a night together having drug-induced fantasies of killing the chauvinist. One of them panics the following day when she suspects she really has poisoned the tyrant. In her debut acting role, Dolly Parton steals the show with this office satire that serves as a timeless and searing commentary on sexism in the workplace.
9 to 5 may be famous for its theme song, but it’s the brilliant combination of humor mixed with tackling real gender issues that makes it a classic. Watch these ladies get stoned, fantasize about killing their boss, and then actually seek out a plan to make him pay.
Directed by Colin Higgins. United States. 1980. 110 minutes. DCP.
