Roxie Theater Closing Until Further Notice

Dear Friends,

First off, we really want to express a heartfelt thank you to members of our community–individuals and partner organizations–who have reached out to express their support for the Roxie during these tough times. The social and financial impacts of COVID-19 have illuminated how vulnerable small businesses, non-profits, students, artists, service industry workers, and many other marginalized groups are in times of fear and uncertainty.

Since the arrival of COVID-19 (coronavirus) to the Bay Area, we have all been experiencing challenging and stressful times. As a non-profit community movie theater, the health and well-being of our community is our top priority, which is why our Board of Directors and staff have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Roxie today. We anticipate that we will remain closed until April 7, with possible extensions based on the latest public health conditions. All scheduled programming during that time is canceled or postponed.

Our decision to cancel film screenings reflects the latest recommendations we have received from public health authorities, which have advised against public gatherings to reduce and slow the spread of COVID-19. Here at the Roxie, we pride ourselves on being a community gathering place—a place to experience the transformative power of film and to share meaningful, nuanced conversations. And so, it’s with our beloved community in mind that we implement this closure. We understand that this news will be disappointing for many, as it is for us. But we believe that it’s the right thing to do for our staff, patrons, volunteers, members, and the community at large.

During this temporary closure, we’ll still be accepting membership sign-ups and renewals, and donations. Your financial support is especially appreciated at this time, as it will help us to compensate our hardworking and dedicated staff. Donations will also assist us in reopening with minimal disruption to operations and programming.

If you have purchased tickets for a screening during our closure, you will receive an email shortly with instructions on how to request a refund. If you are a current member, we will be sending a follow-up email that details how this will affect your membership.

Our office staff will be working only part-time and the best way to reach us will be by emailing [email protected] We appreciate your patience as we do our best to address your questions and concerns in a timely manner.

Throughout the closure, we hope to engage our film-loving community in creative ways. Keep an eye on our weekly emails for updates!

We wish you and your loved ones the best of health during this critical time. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Lex Sloan, Executive Director
Isabel Fondevila, Director of Programming
Rick Norris, Programmer
Kelly N. Wiggin, Operations Manager
And the entire Roxie board and staff

In addition to increased sanitation throughout our facilities, we are also reducing seating capacity in each of our theaters, effective immediately to a number that will allow for what is presently considered sufficient space for social distancing. Due to the reduction in seating capacity, films may sell out more quickly. We encourage you to purchase tickets in advance when possible. We are evaluating the situation as it evolves on a daily basis and will continue to follow the guidance of government agencies. We understand that circumstances will likely remain fluid in the coming days and weeks. We will adapt accordingly and update you with any changes to our programs. Please accept our immense gratitude for your patience as we attempt to navigate this ever-evolving situation.
