Produced for television’s Playhouse 90, it was written by Rod Serling a year before his weekly fantasy-noir series The Twilight Zone debuted, and directed by John Frankenheimer four years before his classic noir The Manchurian Candidate dazzled moviegoers. An imaginatively dark drama about racial prejudice in small-town America that drew rave reviews from the New York Times when it first aired over fifty years ago: “Mr. Frankenheimer’s staging was the directorial art at its most effective.
