MIRAGE/13 WEST STREET
Saturday August 21
MIRAGE
A wildly entertaining big budget black & white thriller most definitely in the Hitchcock mode! (It’s the first of no fewer than three “Hitchcock Homagia” films in this series; see Friday, August 27). Gregory Peck stars as a man with a dangerous case of amnesia trying desperately to piece together the last two years of his life. Diane Baker adds her own silky charm as a darkly mysterious woman who seems to turn up whenever someone gets killed. Breathtaking monochrome brainbender is a must-see on the big screen! The cinematography is by Joseph MacDonald (Pick Up On South Street) and the score comes from Quincy Jones. The incredible supporting cast includes Walter Matthau, Kevin McCarthy, and George Kennedy. Screenplay by Peter Stone (Charade). Directed by Edward Dmytryk (Murder My Sweet, The Sniper). In B&W. 35mm Studio Print. 108 mins. 1965. SAT at 4:00, 8:00
13 WEST STREET
Alan Ladd’s second-to-last film finds him looking very unhealthy and shaken (a real-life suicide attempt occurred around this time), providing him the opportunity to deliver a strong and honestly dark performance as a man driven to vengeance after he’s attacked and beaten by a gang of vicious teenage punks. A strangely (and unjustly) forgotten film, coming shortly after the end of the classic noir cycle. The novel on which it’s based was written by famed noir scribe Leigh Brackett. Co-starring Rod Steiger, Michael Callan and Dolores Dorn. Directed by Philip Leacock. In B&W. 35mm Studio Print. 80 mins. 1962. SAT at 2:15, 6:15, 10:00
