ALICE WATERS IN PERSON!

From farmers to vampires, the “stinking rose” has made its mark on our culture. Filmmaker Les Blank takes on the history and meaning of garlic through interviews with chefs, journalists, and historians, as well as scenes from the Gilroy Garlic Festival and Chez Panisse’s Bastille Day garlic-themed menu. Meet the founder of a garlic appreciation society, learn songs about garlic, and watch Henry Chung of Henry’s Hunan prepare a garlicky stir fry. Even Werner Herzog makes an appearance, trying to defend the absence of garlic in his celebrated vampire film, Nosferatu.

Alice Waters, one of the many stars of the film, will join us to introduce the film and share her thoughts on garlic’s place in food history and culture.
