Shinujo is a self-respecting samurai who is dissatisfied with his position as the Shogun’s food taster and dreams of career teaching swordsmanship. One day, he tastes a poisoned sashimi intended for the head of the clan and nearly dies. When he wakes up he discovers he is blind. Shinujo considers suicide, but his loving wife Kayo hides his sword from him. As Shinujo becomes accustomed to his blindness, rumor reaches him about a relationship Kayo is having with the Shogun’s head economist. In “Love And Honor,” the third and finest chapter of his samurai trilogy which includes “The Twilight Samurai” and “The Hidden Blade, renowned director Yoji Yamada has made an emotional and intense story that culminates with a gripping sword duel. “Love And Honor” received 12 nominations for the 30th Japan Academy Awards.
