SF INDIE FEST: The Blood of Rebirth
Toshiaki Toyoda 2009
Run time: 83 min. | Japan
US PREMIERE
Toyoda Toshiaki (of past IndieFest titles Hanging Garden, Nine Souls, and Blue Spring) is back with another beautiful, mind-expanding film. The Blood of Rebirth loosely adapts a well-known Japanese folktale with minimal dialogue and visual eloquence. Set in a time when gods and demons ruled the Earth, our hero finds himself undead after helping a captive princess escape from their VD ridden Lord. He takes the form of a Hungry Ghost and flees with the princess, but the Lord is hot on their heels, hell bent on finding and punishing his two escapees. "To get an idea of what this trippy film is about, imagine a samurai film by psychedelic maestro Alejandro Jodorowsky, add the hallucinogenic music of early Pink Floyd, and stir. Back from hiatus (the drug possession charge may have had something to do with it), Toshiaki Toyoda (creator of the remarkable 9 Souls and Blue Spring) takes his place in the vanguard of a stunning resurgence of Japanese cinema. The Blood of Rebirth is an explosive concoction of poetry and rock’n’roll: orgasmic and mind-blowing with a final scene as wild as anything on film." - Julien Fonfrède, Montreal Film Festival
Co-presented by the Center for Asian American Media and the Japan Society of Northern California
