In Wiebke von Carolsfeld’s STAY, Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) and Aidan Quinn play two lovers—Abbey & Dermot—caught at a crossroads, each struggling to find a place to call home. The couple reside peacefully in Connemara, amid the beautiful Irish countryside, until Abbey’s pregnancy is revealed and Dermot struggles to accept the responsibilities of fatherhood.
What follows is a narrative spanning two continents, as Abbey and Dermot traverse independent paths of self-discovery whilst contemplating the future of their relationship. Seeking a better life, Oscar Ramirez and his family decide to move from the poverty stricken rice fields of the Northern Philippine mountain ranges, and journey towards the capital mega city of Metro Manila. Upon arriving in the big city, Oscar and his family fall foul to various city inhabitants whose manipulative ways are a daily part of city survival. Oscar manages to land a job as a driver for an armored truck company and is befriended by Ong, his senior officer. Before long, it becomes apparent that Ong, has been planning the arrival of someone just like Oscar for sometime.

A strange singer with “god given talent” drifts through the mythic city of Memphis under its canopy of ancient oak trees, shattered windows, and burning spirituality. Surrounded by lovers, legends, hustlers, preachers, and a wolfpack of kids, the unstable performer avoids the recording studio and is driven to spend time in his own form of self-discovery. Shown in fragments, his journey drags him from love and happiness right to the edge of another dimension. Featuring an explosive performance and score from the singular recording artist-cum-wizard, Willis Earl Beal, MEMPHIS is a film steeped in folklore, music, surrealism, and the abstract search for glory.
It is legend in Memphis that a blessed and cursed singer by the name of O.V. Wright fell from grace and was buried in an unmarked grave. I learned of his myth around the same time I was brought to Peace Baptist Church, and witnessed a deep spirituality as ancient as the oak trees that dress every street in the city. A true believer in ghost stories and a scholar of African American studies, I was drawn to tell my own folk tale, and there was only one place on my mind. Our film captures the descent of a troubled singer as he drifts through an urban landscape looking to save his very soul. We surrounded ourselves with real Memphians and made a film that hopes to project a cool, beautiful world – as old as dirt and yet entirely new, and deserved of the title MEMPHIS.

The subject of Somali pirates still strikes fear in the hearts of us Westerners, for it’s all a landscape that’s totally different than anything we could possibly know about. Shot in East Africa using first-time Somali actors, Fishing Without Nets ls the mesmerizing, sobering story of the region’s bandits from the Somali point-of-view. In Somalia, principled, young husband and father Abdi turns to piracy to support his family. While his wife and child wait for him in Yemen, an outdated and fragile satellite phone is his only connection to all he truly values. The big Roxie screen will glisten with unimaginable star power provided by Jean Gabin, Simone Signoret, Brigitte Bardot, and 1950s French glamour couple Robert Hossein and Marina Vlady. Most of these exciting films have been absent from US movie screens for decades and we are indeed honored to be hosting this incredible event.

Presented by Spoke Art gallery, this special event closes out their month long Wes Anderson themed art exhibit, on view at their Sutter street gallery from November 1st – 22nd.

Max Fischer is a precocious 15-year-old whose reason for living is his attendance at Rushmore, a private school where he’s not doing well in any of his classes, but where he’s the king of extracurricular activities – from being in the beekeeping society to writing and producing plays, there’s very little after school he doesn’t do. His life begins to change, however, when he finds out he’s on academic probation, and when he stumbles into love with Miss Cross, a pretty teacher of the elementary school at Rushmore. Added to the mix is his friendship with Herman Blume, wealthy industrialist and father to boys who attend the school, and who also finds himself attracted to Miss Cross. Max’s fate becomes inextricably tied to this odd love triangle, and how he sets about resolving it is the story in the film.

Crime Wave is a 1985 film made by Winnipeg-based filmmaker John Paizs shot between 1984 and 1986.The film is an homage to late 1940s-early 1950s “color crime pictures”. Paizs plays Steven Penny, a struggling screenwriter who lives above the garage of a suburban family, and begins typing each night from the moment the street lamp comes on. Everything we learn about the character comes from Kim (Eva Kovacs), the family’s daughter, who has a schoolgirl crush on him, as Penny never utters a word in the entire film.
Steven is able to write beginnings and endings, but not middles, and we are treated to some of these amusing endings and rather repetitive beginnings that introduce several characters from various geographic regions to settle upon the film’s hero “from the North”.
The film is designed to emulate the look and feel of educational films from the period.Randolph Peters includes a flute and glockenspiel-based score emulating such films (the film concludes with a song based on this theme that discusses the possibility of Steven and Kim getting married sung by a small 1950s-style pop chorus). When Steven Penny is brought into some shady deals, the film takes on more of a neo noir look and sound, inflected with surrealism. One of the film’s signature images is of the street lamp smashed over Steven’s head, which he wears home.
A young director intent on making “the greatest color crime movie ever” can’t seem to finish his script–he has a beginning and an end, but he can’t quite figure out the middle. The daughter of his landlord, excited to have a real “movie person” living nearby, tries to help by putting him in touch with a man who wants to collaborate on a script–the strange “Dr. Jolly”.
