OMAR
March 14, 2014 - March 25, 2014

OmarAn Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, OMAR is a tense, gripping thriller about betrayal, suspected and real, in the Occupied Territories. Omar (Adam Bakri) is a Palestinian baker who routinely climbs over the separation wall to meet up with his girl Nadja (Leem Lubany). By night, he’s either a freedom fighter or a terrorist—you decide—ready to risk his life to strike at the Israeli military with his childhood friends Tarek (Eyad Hourani) and Amjad (Samer Bisharat).

Arrested after the killing of an Israeli soldier and tricked into an admission of guilt by association, he agrees to work as an informant. So begins a dangerous game—is he playing his Israeli handler (Waleed F. Zuaiter) or will he really betray his cause? And who can he trust on either side? Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now) has made a dynamic, action-packed drama about the insoluble moral dilemmas and tough choices facing those on the frontlines of a conflict that shows no sign of letting up. Directed by Hany Abu-Assad. With Adam Bakri, Leem Lubany, Eyad Hourani, Samer Bisharat, Waleed F. Zuaiter. Palestine. In Hebrew & Arabic with English subtitles. Digital. 2013.

DOCUNIGHT #2: RED LINES AND DEADLINES
March 25, 2014

docunights

Presented by Docunight, in collaboration with National Iranian American Council
In 2004 filmmaker Taghi Amirani gained unprecedented access to Shargh, at the time Iran’s leading reformist newspaper. With full official permits from all the relevant Iranian authorities he went behind the scenes with the paper’s young journalists as they went about their job of reporting and commenting on a wide range of social, cultural and political stories.  Amirani’s camera follows the journalists on assignments and at home as they offer rare insights not just about journalism but also about post revolutionary Iranian society.  Made in the final year of President Khatami’s second term in office, RED LINES AND DEADLINES is a film made by an Iranian with Iranians that tries to stay clear of clichés about Iran presented in western media.
Director: Taghi Amirani. 2004/5.
About Docunight
Every last Tuesday of every month, Docunight will screen a documentary about, around, in, made by Iran or Iranians.  The screenings will take place on the same night across several cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, London, and Dubai (the list of locations is growing). Docunight films will be diverse in subject and will run the gamut.  All films will have English subtitles.

FAUST
April 18, 2014 - April 24, 2014

faust movie poster

“There are some films that make you cry, there are some films that make you laugh, and there are some films that change you forever after you see them; and this is one of them.”– Darren Aronofsky.

“Faust is compellingly, often hypnotically dreamlike and grotesque, a film not quite like any other. It rings bells redolent of certain classic 1970s Herzog features…”– Dennis Harvey, SF Bay Guardian

SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE! Winner of the 2011 Venice International Film Festival’s Golden Lion.

FAUST is the latest film from acclaimed director Alexander Sokurov (RUSSIAN ARK), a hallucinatory re-imagining of Goetheʼs masterpiece set in the early 19th century. It concludes his “Men of Power” tetralogy, and features the exquisite cinematography of Bruno Delbonnel (INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS). Faust is a man in search of the ideals of the Enlightenment, but becomes obsessed with the lovely Margarete and eventually sells his soul to the Devil so that he may possess her. Comic, cosmic, painterly and stunningly beautiful scenes abound as the Devil takes Faust on a strange, unforgettable journey. Directed by Alexander Sokurov. 2011. Digital. In German with English subtitles.

PandaMain

One day, Papa Panda and his son, Pandy, make a daring escape from a zoo in hopes of finding themselves a nice and cozy home. A charming little house near the bamboo thicket attracts their attention, and they decide to drop in for a friendly visit. It is here that they find a sweet young girl, Pamela, who is house-sitting while her grandmother is away.
In talking with Pamela, they learn that she has no parents, so Papa Panda, feeling sorry for her, volunteers to be her new Daddy. In return Pamela offers to be Pandys new mother. From this day forward, they all live together as one big happy family, each day bringing a new and exciting adventure. Along the way, they befriend a tiger, who has lost its way from the circus. Eventually the tiger finds his way back but only after being involved in several mishaps with Pandy.

Then they encounter a fierce storm which floods the neighborhood. A SOS message is received from the tiger, who is trapped inside a train with the rest of the circus animals, because of the storm.
They rush to the rescue of their distressed friends. Papa Panda braves the foul weather and tears the roof off the train to free the trapped animals. However, in the midst of doing so, the train suddenly takes off and heads towards the town, out of control.
The townspeople all panic as the train is about to crash into their homes. But their fear is put to rest as Papa Panda succeeds in stopping the train in the nick of time and saves them all from a sure disaster.

In 1995, Katsuhiro Otomo’s epic anthology MEMORIES showcased the work of upcoming superstars of the anime world. Now, Otomo’s spotlight shifts to a fresh generation of master creators with an all-new anthology of visionary films: A lone traveler is confronted by unusual spirits in an abandoned shrine in the 2013 Academy Award® nominated POSSESSIONS (TSUKUMO), directed by Shuhei Morita (COICENT, KAKURENBO). A mysterious white bear defends the royal family from the predations of a red demon in the brutal GAMBO, directed by Hiroaki Ando (FIVE NUMBERS!) from REDLINE’s Katsuhito Ishii’s original story with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (NEON GENESIS EVANGELION). The focus shifts from supernatural to science fiction for the action packed A FAREWELL TO WEAPONS (BUKI YO SARABA),as MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM designer Hajime Katoki helms Otomo’s tour-de-forcesaga of men battlingrobotic tanks in apocalyptic Tokyo, while grandmaster Otomohimself assumes the directorial reigns for a spectacular tale of love, honor and firefighting in ancient Japan with the multi-award winning COMBUSTIBLE (HI-NO-YOUJIN). Prepare your senses for the animated films that are taking the critical world by storm as a new era in anime is ushered in with Katsuhiro Otomo’s SHORT PEACE!
