WR STILL 1

SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE! Christmastime is looking swell for pretty, unassuming real-estate-agent Suzann: she just sold a house to a nice swinger couple; her husband Jeff scored a sweet new job; and her favorite holiday is quickly approaching. After a sudden tragedy takes Jeff away, Suzanne is left lost and lonely. Even worse, a friend of his confesses a secret: there’s another woman. Her name’s Fantasia and she works at the “girl club.” In their grief, the two women form an awkward but meaningful friendship. Pushing away the ghosts of Christmas present, Suzanne falls into Fantasia’s world of dance parties, shoplifting and substances! But maybe that’s not what Suzanne’s looking for either…

SHANE CARRUTH: PRIMER/UPSTREAM COLOR
January 6, 2014

123456SHANE CARRUTH: HARD SCIENCE & HUMAN NATURE

On the strength of just two incredibly intimate, intricate and idiosyncratic feature films in ten years, writer/director/actor/composer Shane Carruth has undeniably established himself as an auteur on the bleeding edge of science fiction.

SHANE CARRUTH WILL JOIN US LIVE VIA SKYPE AFTER PRIMER AND BEFORE UPSTREAM COLOR TO DISCUSS BOTH FILMS!

PRIMER – By day, a group of small engineers work for a large corporation, and at night they unwind by conducting extracurricular experiments in their garage.  While tweaking their latest project, they accidentally discover it has some highly unexpected capabilities…ones that may enable them to do and gain anything they conceive.  Taking advantage of this opportunity will be the first challenge they face.  Dealing with the consequences could be their last.  7:15pm

UPSTREAM COLOR – Kris is derailed from her life when she is drugged during a home invasion, drawing her into the unbreakable cycle of a mysterious presence that permeates the microscopic world.  Along the way, she finds another being – a familiar man, who is equally consumed by the larger force.  The two search urgently for a place of safety within each other as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of their wrecked lives. 9:30pm

NEW 35MM PRINT!  ROB NILSSON IN PERSON!  NORTHERN LIGHTS illustrates the forgotten history of the pioneer workers of the prairies – men and women who organized, in the American tradition, for their rights and fair practices.  Directors Rob Nilsson and John Hanson, who share North Dakota heritage, filmed in the actual locations of the events, capturing the distinct beauty, and harsh reality, of the prairies. NORTHERN LIGHTS, in it’s production and release, is itself a landmark of American Independent Cinema.

SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE! DIRECTOR LANCE BANGS & SLINT GUITARIST BRIAN MCMAHAN IN PERSON! Feature length documentary about the band Slint and the Louisville music culture they emerged from. Throughout the 1980s, a group of friends in Louisville, Kentucky grew up forming bands, breaking up, and reforming in different configurations. They were playing hardcore shows at ages 10-12, touring with Samhain as 14 year olds, recording for Homestead as Squirelbait at age 15, then formed Slint in their late teens and recorded the classic album Spiderland before they were 21. They broke up before the album’s release, giving no interviews and vanishing into their own shadows. Two decades passed as filmmaker Lance Bangs assembled unseen footage of the teenagers writing and arranging Spiderland as well as the first on camera interviews with the band members and their contemporaries trying to decipher what they had been through. Featuring Slint, Steve Albini, Ian Mackaye, David Grubbs, David Yow, James Murphy and archival material from Will Oldham. Dir: Lance Bangs. 2014. Digital. Thursday at 7:15pm & 9:45pm and Friday at 9:30pm.
