BAY AREA DOCS: BIG JOY – THE ADVENTURES OF JAMES BROUGHTON

& a special introduction by performance artist Jason Jenn, who will be performing an excerpt of his one man show ECSTASY FOR EVERYONE, inspired by the work of James Broughton.

A chronicle of the iconoclastic life of gay poet, filmmaker, and spiritual visionary James Broughton, one of the defining voices of the sexual revolution, whose groundbreaking artistic celebrations of sexuality and the body influenced generations of the 1960’s and 70’s to profoundly embrace life and ‘follow your own weird’.

A charismatic and visionary poet and filmmaker who emerged in the artistic renaissance of post – WWII San Francisco, James Broughton led a completely unconventional existence in his lifelong quest for creative artistry, sexual and spiritual love and an evolved state of happiness. BIG JOY is a celebratory mosaic of Broughton’s deeply intertwined creative and personal lives, vividly depicted through his involvement with a wide array of artists, activists and spiritual guides.

About the filmmakers

Stephen Silha, producer and co-director, is a freelance writer, facilitator, and futurist who has made a practice of communicating about what makes communities and relationships work.  He has reported for The Christian Science Monitor, the Minneapolis Star, and Yes! Magazine.  He knew James Broughton, and was present at his death in 1999.  Inspired by Broughton’s philosophy, life and work, he began a biography project which morphed into this film and multi-media project.

Eric Slade, co-director and producer, is an independent producer/director based in Portland, OR who has extensive experience with PBS.  His independent documentary work includes Hope Along the Wind: The Story of Harry Hay (2002), The Impact of AIDS, Housing the American Dream, Safety in Numbers, Sex Life, and Acting Up for Prisoners.

Jason Jenn is an LA-based performance artist, director, designer, and event planner who was inspired by the film BIG JOY and James Broughton’s poetry to create performance events using Broughton’s poetry and films, bringing them a vibrant contemporary feel.

God Help The Girl

Unknown-2God Help The Girl is a musical feature film, written and directed by Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of the group Belle and Sebastian. It was produced by Barry Mendel and stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray.

Stuart aspired to tell the story of “a better summer, or at least a summer when something happened. It happened to a boy and a girl and a girl in a city roughly the same size and population of Glasgow. Perhaps the canals were a bit grimier, the high-rise buildings taller, the streets emptier when you needed them to be, and the beat clubs busier than the ones around here. But on the whole the city was this one.”

homeAccording to Barry Mendel, “It’s a simple story – about the brief moment after you’ve realised what you want to do with your life, before your dream settles into becoming your job, when you’re filled with enthusiasm, meeting like-minded friends and the possibilities are endless.”

The film was shot, edited, scored and mixed in Glasgow over the course of 2012-2013 and is be released in cinemas around the world in 2014.

NIPPON NIGHTS #4 : IDOL IS DEAD

NIPPON NIGHTS is monthly series of Japanese cinema bridging different genres, styles and generations. In the 2nd season of the series, we introduce Japanese cinema themed with Music.The 1st title is “IDOL IS DEAD”, musical horror comedy stared by real Japanese idol group, BiS.

 

Iimgresn Japan, beautiful pop pin-up Idols rule the music scene. Frustrated in her dreams of being a star in Tokyo, Rui ended up a hostess in a provincial bar. When her former rival Momoko returns home a successful Idol singer, Rui flips out and kills her and the rest of her pop group. In order to hide the crime, she and her friends take the dead girls’ place, creating BiS (Brand-new Idol Society). But when a mad scientist reanimates Momoko as a half-robot half zombie, she retaliates on the new starlets and their fans. A strikingly original part-horror, part-comedy, part-music-video starring one of Japan’s freshest pop sensations. (in Japanese with English subtitles)

Once, Rui has aimed at a singer. However, now, she was frustrated and was doing the hostess’s work in the country. When Rui goes home together with a friend’s Tsunko, She met Momoko, the rival at the time of her having aimed as a singer. Momoko became an idol singer and was successful. On the grounds that Momoko has ridiculed Rui, Rui killed two friends, her and her. In order that Rui may escape a crime, She formed the idol group together with Tsunko pretending to be Momoko and others.

NIPPON NIGHTS #5 : SAVE THE CLUB NOON

This is a documentary about Japan’s law regulating entertainments.

scn_mainNoon, a venerable Osaka club, was busted in April 2012 for violating Japan’s law regulating entertainment establishments. This documentary covers the music event held in July of the same year by over 90 artist teams, who rallied in protest. The law regulating entertainment businesses makes it illegal to allow patrons to dance, but the law went into effect in 1948, and in many ways is out of step with contemporary society. This film delves into problems in Japan’s music industry with interviews of performers like Ito Seiko and Hanaregumi, who have their doubts about the law.

Dancers displeased with the anti-dance law and the shutdown of a popular club in Osaka are taking their arguments to the screens this month in a documentary titled “Save The Club Noon.”

6ab15f49c542a219878ac2ce890ad083_233Noon, located in the Nakazaki-cho district of Osaka, was forced to shut down in April 2012 after local police claimed the club violated the 1948 fueihō entertainment business control law. Eight were arrested in the case, their charges being that the club allowed approximately 20 people to dance on its premises “without permission.” The 65-year-old law was created when so-called dance clubs were used as hotbeds of prostitution. Clubbers have been quick to rise up against a recent crackdown that has caused some lawmakers to push for a reform of the law.

imgres-1But revision of the rules is moving at a snail’s pace, with a preliminary proposal being filed late last month.

Directed by Moriro Miyamoto, the film’s title derives from an event held in July 2012 in which more than 90 artists gathered to protest Noon’s closure. The film features prominent media figures including novelist Seiko Ito as well as the manager of the club. -Japan Times

I heard Mizue is making animation. How exciting! I can’t wait to see!!

s_wonder_omoteInternationally Noteworthy, Japanese Animation Creator : Mirai Mizue! His works have been screened and judged at many international film festivals and he continues to forge the future of the Japanese independent animation scene. Since 2002, he has been creating abstract animations, known as his ‘cell animations’, in which cell structures form the central motif.

In 2011, Modern No.2 was nominated to the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival and to the Spectrum section at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, enthralling audiences with its vivid colors and dynamic, delicate movements synchronized with music. In 2012, Modern No.2 won the SACEM Award for Original Music Prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the world’s biggest animation festival. With his vast experience and boundless energy, Mizue is in his prime as a filmmaker.
In “WONDER FULL!!”, a film that Mirai selected and joined some films from his works himself will be screened.

Director’s statements

wonderfull_making03Getting this pleasant opportunity to show many of my films first time, I take into account of the order, music and screen size of my works since 2003 to make those like one long-animation film. I believe it will help you to enjoy and understand all films naturally and smoothly.

(As life and death is never-ending and have existed since extremely long time ago, it is probably just one tiny piece what I can feel.)
s_wonderfull_wonder1Our body is composed of over 60 trillion cells. Surprisingly, it is way much more than the number of all stars in the solar system. Needless to say, each of our cells is alive and both life and death take place for each cell again and again and again until our lives will end. The world is always full of WONDER.
If you feel wonder, miracle, surprise, and a mass of happiness through my masterpiece, I am very much satisfied.

wonderfull_playg■Modern No. 2 –We went for it without any hesitation. We’ve formed the world at a quickening pace. What on earth is this world that we have created?

■JAM– The sound is piled up. The image is piled up as well. Before long, the screen becomes chaotic.

wonderfull_lostu■Minamo– Made by a frame-by-frame shooting of ink streaming on the surface of water.

■FANTASTIC CELL– This animation is Mirai Mizue’s debut film.vThe birth of ‘cell animations’.

■METROPOLIS– This film was requested from the Seoul International Cartoon And Animation Festival, and produced for the appeal of Seoul City, South Korea.

■TATAMP– wonderfull_devourdEach living object has its own sound.a Thus the sounds varied when there are more living objects. It becomes chaotic, and at the same time, melodic.

■TRIP! TRAP!– An expression of a chaotic world. A mixture of different techniques.Graduation film.

■MODERN– The hexahedron keeps changing shape. Besides, anything doesn’t happen.

wonderfull_jam■LOST UTOPIA– The tale of the Biblical Adam and Eve is used as the motif in this anthropomorphic phantasmagoria of animated images.

■DEVOUR DINNE– Various dinners made with different living things…

■Adamski– A subjective view of an UFO. Shot frame-by-frame along the Tama River.

Mirai Mizue Director/Animator

He was born in Tokyo, 1981. People around him was surprised by his drawing a perfect circle when he was three. He started making animation by himself when someone told him that his illustrations looked like it was moving in his study at the Department of Graphic Design, Tama Art University.

His high quality pictures that he drew by hand on paper and his method to make animation by computer with scanning all papers with his original drawings attract people beyond the border or stereotyped animation.
His first work “FANTASTIC CELL”(2003) debuted on the world stage after received recommendation of the jury at Japan Media Arts Festival.
The short animated films he made has been always beloved around the world.
His graduation film “LOST UTOPIA”(2007) has screened over eighty film festivals in the world.
In 2011, “MODEERN NO.2″ was screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival,
and he became the first Japanese who received SACEM Award(an award for best music)
at Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the next year.
