Biophilia Live is a concert film by Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland that captures the human element of Björk’s multi-disciplinary multimedia project: Biophilia. NIPPON NIGHTS is monthly series of Japanese cinema bridging different genres, styles and generations. In the 2nd season of the series, we introduce Japanese cinema themed with Music.The 1st title is “IDOL IS DEAD”, musical horror comedy stared by real Japanese idol group, BiS.

 

Iimgresn Japan, beautiful pop pin-up Idols rule the music scene. Frustrated in her dreams of being a star in Tokyo, Rui ended up a hostess in a provincial bar. When her former rival Momoko returns home a successful Idol singer, Rui flips out and kills her and the rest of her pop group. In order to hide the crime, she and her friends take the dead girls’ place, creating BiS (Brand-new Idol Society). But when a mad scientist reanimates Momoko as a half-robot half zombie, she retaliates on the new starlets and their fans. Once, Rui has aimed at a singer. However, now, she was frustrated and was doing the hostess’s work in the country. When Rui goes home together with a friend’s Tsunko, She met Momoko, the rival at the time of her having aimed as a singer. Momoko became an idol singer and was successful. On the grounds that Momoko has ridiculed Rui, Rui killed two friends, her and her. In order that Rui may escape a crime, She formed the idol group together with Tsunko pretending to be Momoko and others.

From her early infatuation with books and her first experience in a gay bar; from her marriage in adolescence to her last lover, REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG is a fascinating look at a towering cultural critic and writer whose works on photography, war, illness, and terrorism still resonate today. More than any other thinker of her day, Sontag was watched, viewed, photographed and stared at. NIPPON NIGHTS is monthly series of Japanese cinema bridging different genres, styles and generations. In the 2nd season of the series, we introduce Japanese cinema themed with Music.

This is a documentary about Japan’s law regulating entertainments.

scn_mainNoon, a venerable Osaka club, was busted in April 2012 for violating Japan’s law regulating entertainment establishments. Eight were arrested in the case, their charges being that the club allowed approximately 20 people to dance on its premises “without permission.”  The law regulating entertainment businesses makes it illegal to allow patrons to dance, but the law went into effect in 1948, and in many ways is out of step with contemporary society. The 65-year-old law was created when so-called dance clubs were used as hotbeds of prostitution. This documentary covers the music event held in July of the same year by over 90 artist teams, who rallied in protest.  This film delves into problems in Japan’s music industry with interviews of performers like Ito Seiko and Hanaregumi, who have their doubts about the law.

high_five1On October 2nd, 1977 Dusty Baker hit his 30th homerun of the season, making history as the 4th player on the Dodgers to hit 30 or more home runs. As Baker rounded the bases, an excited rookie named Glenn Burke met him at home plate, raised his arm high in the air and slapped Baker five. It was the first high five recorded in the history of sports. A year later, Burke was forced about of baseball amid rumors of his sexual orientation. The film takes audiences back to the spontaneous moment between the two men and tells the story of how the celebratory gesture spread throughout the sports world at same time Burke was being forced from the game he loved. The film won the Jury Award and Best Short Doc at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival.

Luke is currently working on a new documentary about the variety of barber shops and hair salons throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

The Delano Manongs tells the story of the Filipino farmworkers who spurred the Great Grape Strike in 1965 and joined forces with the other ethnic workers to create the United Farmworkers Union.

The film chronicles the untold story of the Filipino farmworkers who instigated one of the biggest labor struggles in American history — the Delano Grape Strike of 1965. Led by Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz and Pete Velasco, the Manongs (a Filipino term of respect for an older man) joined forces with Chicano farmworkers, led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, to create the United Farm Workers Union (UFW). The documentary, compounded by interviews and both archival and present-day footage, sheds light on the lives of these Filipino farmworkers from their arrival into the United States in the 1920s and ’30s to the demise of their assemblage in the 1980s, highlighting their many struggles and achievements. The legacy created by the Manongs — out of a necessity and want for basic equality and humanity — is one still significant to and celebrated by thousands of Filipino Americans today.   The Trailer is Here.

Marissa Aroy, director, of The Delano Manongsreceived an Emmy for the documentary “Sikhs in America,” which was shown on PBS. She produced and directed “Little Manila: Filipinos in California’s Heartland” also for PBS and produced “Sounds of Hope” for Frontline World. Aroy holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston College and a master’s degree in journalism from University of California, Berkeley. She recently came back from Tacloban where she was filming the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban, Philippines for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Aroy was named one of the most influential Filipina women in the US in 2009 by the Filipina Womens Network. As a 13 year-old, Matthew Boger was thrown out of his home for being gay. While living on the streets of Hollywood, he was savagely beaten in a back alley by a group of neo-Nazi skinheads. Boger managed to survive the attack and escape life on the streets. Twenty-five years later, Boger found himself in a chance meeting with a former neo-Nazi skinhead, Tim Zaal. The two men soon realized that they had met before…Zaal was one of the attackers who beat Boger and left him for dead. 

With their worlds turned upside down, the two embarked on a journey of forgiveness and reconciliation that challenged both to grapple with their own beliefs and fears. Neither could imagine that it would to lead to an improbable collaboration…and friendship.

Cohen has had an ongoing relationship with Academy Award-winning director Steven Okazaki for over 15 years. Last year he produced the Okazaki-directed APPROXIMATELY NELS CLINE, about the world-renowned lead guitarist of the rock band Wilco. s_wonder_omoteInternationally Noteworthy, Japanese Animation Creator : Mirai Mizue! His works have been screened and judged at many international film festivals and he continues to forge the future of the Japanese independent animation scene. Since 2002, he has been creating abstract animations, known as his ‘cell animations’, in which cell structures form the central motif.

In 2011, Modern No.2 was nominated to the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival and to the Spectrum section at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, enthralling audiences with its vivid colors and dynamic, delicate movements synchronized with music. In 2012, Modern No.2 won the SACEM Award for Original Music Prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the world’s biggest animation festival. With his vast experience and boundless energy, Mizue is in his prime as a filmmaker.
In “WONDER FULL!!”, a film that Mirai selected and joined some films from his works himself will be screened.

wonderfull_making03Getting this pleasant opportunity to show many of my films first time, I take into account of the order, music and screen size of my works since 2003 to make those like one long-animation film. I believe it will help you to enjoy and understand all films naturally and smoothly.

(As life and death is never-ending and have existed since extremely long time ago, it is probably just one tiny piece what I can feel.)
s_wonderfull_wonder1Our body is composed of over 60 trillion cells. Surprisingly, it is way much more than the number of all stars in the solar system. Needless to say, each of our cells is alive and both life and death take place for each cell again and again and again until our lives will end. The world is always full of WONDER.
If you feel wonder, miracle, surprise, and a mass of happiness through my masterpiece, I am very much satisfied.

■JAM– The sound is piled up. The image is piled up as well. Before long, the screen becomes chaotic.

Mirai Mizue Director/Animator

He was born in Tokyo, 1981. People around him was surprised by his drawing a perfect circle when he was three. He started making animation by himself when someone told him that his illustrations looked like it was moving in his study at the Department of Graphic Design, Tama Art University.

His high quality pictures that he drew by hand on paper and his method to make animation by computer with scanning all papers with his original drawings attract people beyond the border or stereotyped animation.
His first work “FANTASTIC CELL”(2003) debuted on the world stage after received recommendation of the jury at Japan Media Arts Festival.
The short animated films he made has been always beloved around the world.
His graduation film “LOST UTOPIA”(2007) has screened over eighty film festivals in the world.
In 2011, “MODEERN NO.2″ was screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival,
and he became the first Japanese who received SACEM Award(an award for best music)
at Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the next year.
