LLYN FOULKES ONE MAN BAND
July 18, 2014 - July 24, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE!

During the seven years chronicled in the film, artist and one-man-band musician Llyn Foulkes creates, destroys and recreates a pair of large-scale, three-dimensional paintings, one that costs him his marriage, while trying to keep afloat in the fickle art market. With music written and performed by Foulkes on a massive, fanciful, self-invented musical instrument he calls “The Machine,” LLYN FOULKES ONE MAN BAND is an intimate portrait of an artist battling his own demons as well as the perceived demons of the art world.

INLAND EMPIRE
July 22, 2014 - July 23, 2014

inland empire 2“A Woman in Trouble”, reads the poster for David Lynch’s 2006 magnum opus (and possibly his final movie?), INLAND EMPIRE. It’s about a struggling actress, the barren outskirts of Los Angeles, the shadowy inner-workings of Hollywood, a troubled remake of a cursed, never-completed Polish movie. There’s a family of rabbits on television and two musical numbers. In many ways, it is the ultimate David Lynch movie, and we’re very excited to let you know he’s letting us borrow his personal 35mm print of the film!

Dir: David Lynch. 2006. 35mm. 180 mins. Nightly at 7:15pm.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS
August 1, 2014 - August 7, 2014

Happy ChristmasSAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE!  SKYPE Q&A WITH FILMMAKER JOE SWANBERG FOLLOWING 7pm SHOW on 8/1!

Jenny just broke up with her boyfriend, so she thinks it would be a good time to crash her filmmaker brother Jeff’s Tiki bar basement for a couple of weeks to figure things out. Problem for Jeff is, when you’ve got a toddler and money is tight and your wife is struggling to balance motherhood and art, it might not be a great idea to have a perpetually wasted 27-year old around. Also – it’s Christmas in Chicago. Working again with DRINKING BUDDIES collaborators Anna Kendrick and cinematographer Ben Richardson (working in warm-hued Super 16mm), Swanberg’s latest is a can’t-miss cocktail of effervescent performances, cringe-inducing realities and small graces. Starring Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Lena Dunham & Jude Swanberg.  Dir: Joe Swanberg. 2014. Digital. 77 mins.

Brown Bread: The Story of an Adoptive Family

FILMMAKER SARAH GROSS IN PERSON!

In the hills of Northern California, an unusual family gathers for their reunion. As they join hands around the table, their colorful mix of races looks like the American dream of integration.

Black, white, middle class, ghetto: adoption gave the same name to six children from very different backgrounds.  Scenes from the family reunion are interwoven with images from their home lives:  a professor at Stanford, a manual laborer, an entrepreneur in debt.  How do they bridge the differences of race and class which divide them?

A personal documentary about what it means to grow up in an adoptive family.

Directed by Sarah Gross. 2013. 87 mins. NR

ME AND YOU (Io e Te)
August 22, 2014 - August 28, 2014
ME AND YOU (Io e Te) Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci

ME AND YOU (Io e Te)
Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci

“Beautifully made… a meditation on the transformative possibilities of a relationship.”

– Stephen Holden, New York Times

“[Bertolucci] is still a force to be reckoned with.” – The Guardian

MEANDYOU-master675Bertolucci’s first Italian-language feature in 32 years follows Lorenzo, a quirky 14-year-old loner who has difficult relationships with his parents and peers. Lorenzo decides to take a break from it all by hiding out in his building’s neglected basement where for an entire week he will finally avoid all conflict and pressure to be a “normal” teenager. But an unexpected visit from Lorenzo’s older half-sister Olivia changes everything. A worldly 25-year-old beauty, her problematic and fragile state upsets Lorenzo’s total escape from reality, and their forced cohabitation in the basement’s confined space brings forth confrontation and old resentments, but also a need for affection and intimacy. A few emotional days and nights with his sister Olivia will inspire Lorenzo to see the world through new eyes. Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. Written by Niccolò Ammaniti, Umberto Contarello, Francesca Marciano and Bernardo, based on the novel “Io e Te,” by Mr. Ammaniti. Director of photography: Fabio Cianchetti. With Jacopo Olmo Antinori, Tea Falco, Sonia Bergamasco, Veronica Lazar, Tommaso Ragno and Pippo Delbono. Not Rated. In Italian, with English subtitles. Running time: 97 mins.
