Employing a unique, beautifully textured combination of papier-mâché stop-motion and classic hand-drawn animation (with inspiration from Jan Svankmajer and Bill Plympton), Baumane has produced a poignant and often hilarious tale of mystery, mental health, redemption and survival. Presented by Spoke Art gallery, this special event closes out their month long Wes Anderson themed art exhibit, on view at their Sutter street gallery from November 1st – 22nd.

Crime Wave 16 MM PRINT!

Unknown-2Crime Wave is a 1985 film made by Winnipeg-based filmmaker John Paizs shot between 1984 and 1986.The film is an homage to late 1940s-early 1950s “color crime pictures”. Paizs plays Steven Penny, a struggling screenwriter who lives above the garage of a suburban family, and begins typing each night from the moment the street lamp comes on. Everything we learn about the character comes from Kim (Eva Kovacs), the family’s daughter, who has a schoolgirl crush on him, as Penny never utters a word in the entire film.


CrimeWaveSteven is able to write beginnings and endings, but not middles, and we are treated to some of these amusing endings and rather repetitive beginnings that introduce several characters from various geographic regions to settle upon the film’s hero “from the North”.

The film is designed to emulate the look and feel of educational films from the period.Randolph Peters includes a flute and glockenspiel-based score emulating such films (the film concludes with a song based on this theme that discusses the possibility of Steven and Kim getting married sung by a small 1950s-style pop chorus). When Steven Penny is brought into some shady deals, the film takes on more of a neo noir look and sound, inflected with surrealism. One of the film’s signature images is of the street lamp smashed over Steven’s head, which he wears home.

24A young director intent on making “the greatest color crime movie ever” can’t seem to finish his script–he has a beginning and an end, but he can’t quite figure out the middle. The daughter of his landlord, excited to have a real “movie person” living nearby, tries to help by putting him in touch with a man who wants to collaborate on a script–the strange “Dr. Jolly”.

Lauded not only for his program’s success on the field, but also for students’ achievements in the classroom, Paterno was a revered figure in a town where team loyalty approached nationalistic fervor. Then in November 2011, everything changed when longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse, setting off a firestorm of accusations about who failed to protect the children of Happy Valley. Director Bar-Lev creates an indelible portrait of a wounded community and an engrossing investigation into the role big time football played in both the crimes and their aftermath.

Amir Bar-Lev’s directorial debut FIGHTER was named one of the top documentaries of the year by Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and The Village Voice and won six international festival awards. Sony Pictures Classics released his second film, MY KID COULD PAINT THAT, internationally in 2007, with broadcasts on Starz, A&E and BBC. Bar-Lev traveled to New Orleans nine days after Hurricane Katrina and began filming a young married couple, both crack dealers, with a heroic story of survival during the storm and an uncertain future ahead. Bar-Lev served as co-producer on the resulting film, TROUBLE THE WATER, which was a 2009 Academy Award Nominee. TROUBLE THE WATER also took the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, the Grand Jury Award at Full Frame, a Special Jury Mention at Silverdocs, the IFP Gotham Award for Best Documentary, and was nominated for the PGA Documentary award, and the NAACP Image Awards Best Documentary. s_wonder_omoteInternationally Noteworthy, Japanese Animation Creator : Mirai Mizue! His works have been screened and judged at many international film festivals and he continues to forge the future of the Japanese independent animation scene. Since 2002, he has been creating abstract animations, known as his ‘cell animations’, in which cell structures form the central motif.

In 2011, Modern No.2 was nominated to the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival and to the Spectrum section at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, enthralling audiences with its vivid colors and dynamic, delicate movements synchronized with music. In 2012, Modern No.2 won the SACEM Award for Original Music Prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the world’s biggest animation festival. With his vast experience and boundless energy, Mizue is in his prime as a filmmaker.
In “WONDER FULL!!”, a film that Mirai selected and joined some films from his works himself will be screened.

wonderfull_making03Getting this pleasant opportunity to show many of my films first time, I take into account of the order, music and screen size of my works since 2003 to make those like one long-animation film. I believe it will help you to enjoy and understand all films naturally and smoothly.

(As life and death is never-ending and have existed since extremely long time ago, it is probably just one tiny piece what I can feel.)
s_wonderfull_wonder1Our body is composed of over 60 trillion cells. Surprisingly, it is way much more than the number of all stars in the solar system. Needless to say, each of our cells is alive and both life and death take place for each cell again and again and again until our lives will end. The world is always full of WONDER.
If you feel wonder, miracle, surprise, and a mass of happiness through my masterpiece, I am very much satisfied.

wonderfull_playg■Modern No. 2 –We went for it without any hesitation. We’ve formed the world at a quickening pace. What on earth is this world that we have created?

■JAM– The sound is piled up. The image is piled up as well. Before long, the screen becomes chaotic.

■FANTASTIC CELL– This animation is Mirai Mizue’s debut film.vThe birth of ‘cell animations’.

■METROPOLIS– This film was requested from the Seoul International Cartoon And Animation Festival, and produced for the appeal of Seoul City, South Korea.

■TATAMP– wonderfull_devourdEach living object has its own sound.a Thus the sounds varied when there are more living objects. It becomes chaotic, and at the same time, melodic.

■TRIP! TRAP!– An expression of a chaotic world. A mixture of different techniques.Graduation film.

■MODERN– The hexahedron keeps changing shape. Besides, anything doesn’t happen.

Mirai Mizue Director/Animator

He was born in Tokyo, 1981. People around him was surprised by his drawing a perfect circle when he was three. He started making animation by himself when someone told him that his illustrations looked like it was moving in his study at the Department of Graphic Design, Tama Art University.

His high quality pictures that he drew by hand on paper and his method to make animation by computer with scanning all papers with his original drawings attract people beyond the border or stereotyped animation.
His first work “FANTASTIC CELL”(2003) debuted on the world stage after received recommendation of the jury at Japan Media Arts Festival.
The short animated films he made has been always beloved around the world.
His graduation film “LOST UTOPIA”(2007) has screened over eighty film festivals in the world.
In 2011, “MODEERN NO.2″ was screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival,
and he became the first Japanese who received SACEM Award(an award for best music)
at Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the next year.
