Pirate Night: FISHING WITHOUT NETS
October 5, 2014

unnamedThe subject of Somali pirates still strikes fear in the hearts of us Westerners, for it’s all a landscape that’s totally different than anything we could possibly know about. Shot in East Africa using first-time Somali actors, Fishing Without Nets ls the mesmerizing, sobering story of the region’s bandits from the Somali point-of-view. In Somalia, principled, young husband and father Abdi turns to piracy to support his family. While his wife and child wait for him in Yemen, an outdated and fragile satellite phone is his only connection to all he truly values. Here (in Sundance 2014′s winner for the Directing Award, U.S. Dramatic), debut feature filmmaker Cutter Hodierne combines the epic cinematic vision of a glorious action thriller with the intimate, textured qualities of an arthouse film, humanizing the pirates by bringing us inside their moral dilemmas and gut-wrenching struggles.

BLOOD DRIVE The Roxie is thrilled to be presenting a rare screening of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ incredible and influential 1963 cult shocker! The local Miami cops are baffled (and sickened) when a string of inanely bloddy murders paralyzes the city with fear! It seems a local caterer is hacking up beautiful girls in order to satisfy the blood lust of an ancient Egyptian goddess! Often cited as the first true “splatter gore” film, BLOOD FEAST is nothing short of of miracle of low budget exploitation cinema. Starring William Kerwin, Mal Arnold, Connie Mason. Written and directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis. In garish Eastman color! New digital transfer.

Directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis, 67 mins. 1963. U.S.A.

MV5BMTQwNDg2NjkwMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDg1NjEzOQ@@._V1__SX1082_SY581_YOUNG ONES is set in a near future when water has become the most precious and dwindling resource on the planet, one that dictates everything from political to inter persona.  The land  has withered into something wretched. The dust has settled on a lonely, barren planet. The hardened survivors of the loss of Earth’s precious resources scrape and struggle. Ernest Holm lives on this harsh frontier with his children. He defends his farm from bandits, works the supply routes, and hopes to rejuvenate the soil. But his daughter’s boyfriend has grander designs.  A futuristic western that inventively layers Greek tragedy over an ethereal narrative that’s steeped deeply in the values of the American West. Written & directed by Jake Paltrow.  With Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Kodi Smit-McPhee. Digital. USA. 2014. 100 Minutes.
