BEST OF O-SCOPE: CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF OSCILLOSCOPE FILMS
The New York based independent film distributor has helped to change the face of art house movie releasing! A current wave of artist-driven, youth-oriented independent cinema owes a great deal to this industry-leading company, founded by the late Adam Yauch, and still going strong as it enters its second decade.
PART IV: SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS
Our final pick of Oscilloscope favorites goes to SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS! Yet another phenomenal music documentary that Oscilloscope brought to audiences – and we are so glad they did! On April 2nd, 2011, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM played its “final” show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with New York Magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and TIME magazine lamenting “we may never dance again.” SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is simultaneously a document of a once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of Murphy as he navigates both the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.
Luckily for us, LCD Soundsystem came back in full force in 2016. Even so, this film is a fantastic music moment in time to revel in.
“Shut Up and Play the Hits manages to effectively display the power of that final concert while putting the band’s leader into thoughtful cultural perspective.” -NPR
We are thrilled to get loud at the Roxie with LCD Soundsystem! THANK YOU OSCILLOSCOPE!
