THE SHINING: FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS
May 29 only
FW/BW mastermind, John Fell Ryan will introduce his experiment, along with ROOM 237 director Rodney Ascher, via Skype, before the show!
It’s simply that, the USA cut of the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film overlaid with the visuals reversed, an experiment in alternate projection revealing an array of coincidences and synchronicities. Amplifying Kubrick’s trademark use of symmertry, repetition, mirroring, and doubling, the superimposition is a true psychedelic experience, the titular shining of film made literal, a vision of futures past, somewhere out between magic and madness.
The project was concieved by John Fell Ryan and engineered by Akiva Saunders for The Spectacle Theater, New York, New York, 2011. It has screened at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, Hollywood, The Seattle International Film Festival, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and the back room of a pub in London. John Fell Ryan and the superimposition were both featured in the 2012 documentary Room 237.
