POP/ROX SPLIT SINGLE: APOCALYPSE: BILL CALLAHAN b/w IN SEARCH OF BLIND JOE DEATH: THE SAGA OF JOHN FAHEY
July 09 only
In these early days of summer, let’s turn our attention to two iconoclasts who traversed the highways and bi-ways of America armed with only acoustic guitars and an intense dedication to the truth, however they define it.
APOCALYPSE: BILL CALLAHAN
This strikingly shot documentary follows enigmatic Drag City singer-songwriter Bill Callahan on a two-week tour from California to New York. For the past 25 years, under both the Smog moniker and under his own name, Callahan has cultivated a legacy as both a pioneer in the lo-fi movement and one of the country’s finest troubadors. The film is built on impressionistic scenes of Callahan’s life on the road combined with his cryptic musings (“I started playing music when I was 20, and time stopped for me in a good way”), creating a voyeuristic glimpse into his meticulously constructed universe of disaffection and disorder. Dir. Hanly Blanks. 2012. Digital. 59 mins.
IN SEARCH OF BLIND JOE DEATH: THE SAGA OF JOHN FAHEY
Known as the father of American Primitive Guitar, many consider John Fahey to be a foundational figure in American folk music. IN SEARCH OF BLIND JOE DEATH combines interviews, performances and archival footage with animation in a kinetic, musically charged tribute to a tremendously influential composer, guitarist, author and provocateur. Interviewees include Pete Townshend, Joey Burns of Calexico, Chris Funk of The Decemberists and renowned radio personality Dr. Demento, aka Barry Hansen. Dir: John Cullingham. 2012. Digital. 61 mins.
