Gialloween: Four Classic Italian Thrillers
First show: October 23
With Halloween approaching we like nothing more than a slew of creepy suspense movies, and the golden age of giallo offers gems aplenty. Murder, mania, & black leather gloves … equal parts terror and style … We’ve picked out four films we think you’re going to love!
Monday, October 23, 9:15pm: BLOOD AND BLACK LACE
We’re starting off with one of Mario Bava’s earliest and best! Having established a template for the giallo with THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, Mario Bava set about cementing its rules with BLOOD AND BLACK LACE. In doing so he created one of the most influential films ever made – an Italian classic that would spearhead the giallo genre, provide a prototype for the slasher movie, and have a huge effect on filmmakers as diverse as Dario Argento and Martin Scorsese. 86 min, DCP.
Tuesday, October 24th, 9:15pm: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?
The first of Massimo Dallamano’s “Schoolgirls in Peril” trilogy sees a group of high school students being targeted by a mysterious killer. Their teacher (Fabio Testi), who is also having an affair with one of the students, is the prime suspect. But this is giallo, so things aren’t nearly so simple. Depending on your perspective, this is Eurosleaze at its best or its very worst. To be sure, this one’s a product of its time. 103 min, DCP.
Wednesday, October 25th, 9:15pm: YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY
That title alone should tell you this one isn’t to be missed. Sergio Martino’s lurid take on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat” stars giallo queen Edwige Fenech in one of her wildest roles. 96 min, DCP.
Thursday, October 26th, 9:15 pm: DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING
Lucio Fulci came into his own as a master of unsettling gore effects with DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING. In a nightmarish Italian town, a serial murderer is preying on young boys. Hysteria mounts, false accusations fly, there’s voodoo… It’s intense. 102 min, DCP.
